<image:title>Blog - Senior Pet Care - Regular Vet Visits</image:title>
<image:caption>Regular vet visits and lab testing can allow you to catch health issues before they become clinically obvious, meaning they’re easier to treat, offering a better prognosis. For healthy senior dogs, some veterinarians will recommend wellness visits at least once every six months with yearly lab work. Dogs with health conditions and geriatric dogs might need more frequent check-ups and bloodwork.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Senior dogs have different nutritional needs to younger dogs, including needing food that is easier to digest, different amounts of calories and certain nutrients to help them age well. Typically, you should switch to a senior dog food around age 6, but it depends on the size of your dog and when they are considered “senior”. When switching to a senior food, look for a brand with an AAFCO statement of nutritional adequacy for senior dogs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Senior pups might find it difficult to climb stairs, so you might need to move their sleeping area to one that is reachable without climbing stairs. It might also be useful to install ramps for them to navigate steps more easily. As their mobility deteriorates, older dogs might also struggle with their balance and can find hard, slippery floors stressful to walk on. Covering them with carpet, rugs or mats will help provide more grip.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Senior Pet Care - Exercising Your Senior Dog</image:title>
<image:caption>Senior dogs still require physical activity and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy. Movement helps keep the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints of the body strong and healthy. It also helps limit the risk of obesity and maintain a healthy weight and condition in senior dogs, which is important for their overall well-being. Keeping the mind active is just as important as physical activity because it helps to maintain cognitive function, which can potentially slow the onset of canine dementia.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Pet Parent’s Guide to Summer Safety - Unlike us, dogs don’t sweat all over their bodies. Instead, their main cooling system is panting. When a dog pants, they’re rapidly breathing in and out, which encourages moisture to evaporate off their tongue and respiratory tract. This process works similarly to how sweat cools us — evaporation helps release heat from the body. This method is most effective when a dog is well-hydrated and the air is dry enough to support quick evaporation. But here’s the catch:</image:title>
<image:caption>On hot, humid days, panting doesn’t work as well because evaporation slows down — meaning your dog can overheat much faster.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - National Pet First Aid Awareness Month: Be Prepared to Help Your Pet in an Emergency - Common Pet Emergencies</image:title>
<image:caption>Every pet owner should be aware of the most common emergencies that can arise, so that you’re ready when it counts. Here are some common dog injuries and how to respond: Swallowed Objects Dogs are known for their curiosity, and sometimes that means swallowing things they shouldn’t like rocks, socks, coins, etc. While some objects may pass naturally, others can cause choking or a dangerous intestinal blockage. Signs include gagging, pawing at the mouth, or difficulty breathing. If your dog is choking, you may need to perform the Heimlich maneuver or gently remove the object if possible. If you suspect an obstruction, contact your vet immediately. Poisoning Dogs often ingest things they shouldn’t, from chocolate and plants to household cleaners and medications. Symptoms of poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, or unusual behavior. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect poisoning and bring the item or substance with you if possible. Eye Injuries Eye injuries are common in active dogs, especially those that run through brush or play roughly. Symptoms include squinting, excessive tearing, discharge, redness, or swelling. If you notice these signs, avoid touching the eye and contact your vet for a treatment plan.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - National Pet First Aid Awareness Month: Be Prepared to Help Your Pet in an Emergency - Heatstroke Dogs, especially those with thick coats, are highly susceptible to overheating in hot weather. Watch for symptoms such as excessive panting, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, uncoordinated movements, and, in severe cases, collapse or seizures. If you suspect heatstroke, immediately move your dog to a shaded or air-conditioned area to help lower their body temperature. Use cool (not cold) water to wet their body, focusing on key areas like the belly, paws, and underarms. You can do this by placing a damp towel over them or gently rubbing their paws with a cool, wet cloth. If you have a thermometer, check your dog’s temperature. If your dog’s temperature exceeds 104°F, it’s a medical emergency. Heatstroke can be fatal if not treated promptly. Even if your dog appears to recover, take them to the vet immediately for a thorough evaluation. Hypothermia Hypothermia occurs when a dog’s body temperature drops dangerously low. Symptoms include shivering, lethargy, weakness, shallow breathing, slow heart rate, pale or blue gums, and, in severe cases, collapse or unconsciousness. If you suspect hypothermia, bring your dog indoors immediately. Gradually warm them using blankets, towels, or warm (not hot) water bottles. Focus on warming key areas like the chest and belly by placing warm items around their body. Wrap your dog in thick towels or blankets for added insulation. If your dog is conscious and able to drink, offer small amounts of lukewarm water. Do not use hot water, direct heat, or heating pads, as rapid warming can cause shock or burns. Warmth should be applied gradually. If you have a thermometer, check their temperature. If your dog’s temperature is below 98°F, it’s a medical emergency. Even if your dog seems to improve, contact our vet as soon as possible—hypothermia can lead to serious complications, including organ failure, and may require medical intervention for full recovery.</image:title>

<image:caption>You can always build your own first aid kit using this comprehensive First Aid Checklist, or there are plenty of pre-made kits available that come with the basic essentials. If you go the pre-made route, be sure to check for key items like hydrogen peroxide, a thermometer, and wound care supplies, as some kits may need a few additions to be fully stocked. Make sure to store your kit in a easily accessible location and check it regularly for expired items.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dorothy Harrison Eustis (1886-1946) was an American dog breeder and philanthropist who founded The Seeing Eye, the first guide dog school in the United States. It all started while she was living in Switzerland in 1927, where she bred German Shepherds as police dogs. While there, Eustis wrote an article for The Saturday Evening Post about a German guide dog training school for blind World War I veterans, which sparked a flood of mail! One person who felt compelled to write to her was a young blind man, Morris Frank. Eustis invited Frank to Switzerland, where he trained with Buddy (a female German Shepherd), the first of his six guide dogs (all named Buddy). Following Buddy’s success, Eustis established a guide dog school in Switzerland in 1928 before partnering with Frank in 1929 to launch The Seeing Eye program in New Jersey, now based in Morristown. Their pioneering efforts revolutionized mobility for blind individuals, and today, a statue of Morris Frank and Buddy stands in Morristown to honor their legacy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Women’s History Month: The Dog World - Anne Rogers Clark</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1956, Anne Rogers Clark (1929-2006) made history as the first woman to win Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show as a professional handler, guiding the Toy Poodle Wilbur White Swan to victory. Clark’s influence in the dog world extended far beyond the show ring. One of the few individuals licensed to judge all 165 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club, she had an impressive 22 judging appearances at Westminster. She was also the only person in the show’s long history to judge all seven groups as well as Best in Show. As a breeder, Clark worked with English Cockers, Norfolk Terriers, and Whippets, but she was best known for her Poodles. A master in presentation, she revolutionized Poodle grooming by being among the first to blow-dry the coat in its natural direction rather than relying on traditional crate-drying methods. This technique resulted in a smoother, more polished appearance, giving her dogs a competitive edge and setting a new standard in the grooming world. Clark’s legacy as a handler, judge, and innovator remains unmatched, cementing her as a true trailblazer in the history of dog shows.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Women’s History Month: The Dog World - Laika</image:title>
<image:caption>In the 1950s and 1960s, dozens of dogs played a crucial role in the Soviet space program, and almost all of them were female. Many were used for sub-orbital journeys, but the first dog to actually reach outer space was Laika, a stray terrier mix, on November 3, 1957. Aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2, Laika became the first animal to orbit the Earth, soaring to a height of 2,000 miles. Dubbed “Muttnik” by the press, she captured the world’s imagination as a pioneer of space exploration. Sadly, her journey was a one-way trip, and she passed away aboard the spacecraft. Though her mission was brief, Laika’s legacy paved the way for human spaceflight and cemented her place in history.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On August 19, 1960, two mixed-breed dogs, Belka and Strelka, made history aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 5. Unlike earlier missions, theirs was a success—not only did they complete several orbits around the Earth, but they also returned safely, becoming the first living creatures to survive spaceflight. Their journey was a pivotal moment in space exploration. The mission’s success provided crucial data that paved the way for human spaceflight, leading to the historic launch of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit less than a year later. Belka and Strelka’s safe return proved that living beings could endure space travel, securing their place as pioneers of the Space Age.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roselle, a Labrador Retriever guide dog, displayed extraordinary courage on September 11, 2001, by leading her owner, Michael Hingson, down 78 floors from his office in the World Trade Center to safety. Despite the chaos, smoke, and falling debris, Roselle remained calm and focused, guiding Hingson through the terrifying conditions with unwavering determination. For her bravery and loyalty, she and Salty (another trained guide dog) were awarded a joint Dickin Medal (referred to as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross) by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals on March 5, 2002. Roselle was also recognized by the British Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, awarded a ‘Partners in Courage’ award by the Guiding Eyes for the Blind association, and she was also honored with the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence in 2002 and recognized (posthumously) as one of the Hero Dogs by the American Humane Association in 2011.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bretagne (pronounced “Brit-nee”), a Golden Retriever, was on of the many heroic female dogs who aided in the rescue and recovery efforts after 9/11. Alongside her handler, Denise Corliss, a volunteer firefighter, Bretagne traveled from Texas to New York, where the duo embarked on their first-ever rescue mission. For ten days, Bretagne worked 12-hour shifts, tirelessly searching for survivors, providing comfort to first responders, and sleeping outdoors alongside Corliss. After returning to Texas, Bretagne continued her service as a search and rescue dog with Texas Task Force 1, later assisting in disaster relief efforts, including the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.</image:caption>

Proper exposure helps them feel more confident and comfortable in new settings Positive Play Behavior & Boundaries: Socialization teaches dogs appropriate play behavior, like how to take turns, when to initiate play, and when to respect another dog’s space Improved Communication Skills: Dogs learn to read and respond to body language and vocal cues, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively with other dogs and people</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Pet Ownership: Key Aspects Every Pet Parent Should Know - Every dog has a different level of comfort when it comes to interacting with others. Some dogs are highly social, while others may be more selective. The level of social tolerance can depend on factors like training, handling, genetics, and even health status (such as stress or pain). Understanding where your dog falls on the social spectrum helps guide your interactions with them and ensures that they’re comfortable in social settings.</image:title>

<image:caption>Make it positive: Use treats and praise to help them associate new experiences with something fun Take it slow: Avoid overwhelming them by introducing too much too quickly. Short, positive sessions are key Expose them to new environments: Once your puppy is comfortable with basic experiences, take them to public places like pet stores, parks, or different streets to further expand their comfort zone Attend puppy classes: Puppy classes not only teach basic commands but also provide opportunities for socialization with other puppies Schedule playdates: Playdates with dogs of similar size and temperament help build their social skills and comfort levels</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Pet Ownership: Key Aspects Every Pet Parent Should Know - Here are the key components of commitment:</image:title>
<image:caption>Time: Dogs need daily attention and exercise, and their emotional needs require you to be present. They’re social animals and thrive on interaction with their humans. If your lifestyle involves long hours away from home, it’s crucial to plan for how your dog will be taken care of during that time (dog sitter, walkers, or daycare). Exercise is essential, not only to keep your dog physically fit but also to prevent boredom. Whether it’s walks, playtime, or training, your dog will need consistent attention Financial: Owning a dog comes with ongoing costs. In addition to food, you’ll need to budget for vet visits, vaccinations, grooming, toys, training, and emergency care Training: Dogs need positive discipline and consistent training to understand boundaries, expectations, and acceptable behaviors. Whether you are training a puppy or an adult dog, ongoing work is required to reinforce good habits and correct undesirable ones. Lifestyle: Before getting a dog, consider how they’ll fit into your current lifestyle. Some dogs require more time, attention, and exercise than others. If you travel frequently or work long hours, it’s important to ensure your dog is cared for in your absence. Dogs also thrive on routine, so be prepared to stick to a schedule for feeding, exercise, and bedtime</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Pet Ownership: Key Aspects Every Pet Parent Should Know - What empties a dog’s emotional cup?</image:title>
<image:caption>Social isolation or prolonged confinement without stimulation Overstimulation from too much exercise or lack of rest Unpredictable training or inconsistent routines Not addressing their physical or emotional needs, like hunger, boredom, or lack of attention Signs of an empty emotional cup: Restlessness or excessive barking Over-reacting or shutting down in response to stimuli Changes in behavior, such as hoarding resources, increased irritability, or a loss of appetite What refills a dog’s emotional cup? Engaging in “dog things,” such as sniffing, chewing, playing, and exploring Unconditional love and attention from their owner Freedom to move and explore in a safe environment Predictable routines, like regular feeding times, walks, and play sessions Having a safe, quiet space to rest and relax</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Pet Ownership: Key Aspects Every Pet Parent Should Know - Fostering a healthy relationship includes…</image:title>
<image:caption>Creating Rules & Boundaries: Dogs feel more secure when they know what to expect from their environment. Consistent rules help them feel safe and understand what’s acceptable behavior and what’s not. Learn to Read Your Dog’s Body Language: Dogs communicate primarily through body language. By understanding their cues (like tail wagging, posture, or ear position), you can gauge how they feel and adjust your actions accordingly. If they’re feeling anxious or uncomfortable, you can help redirect their attention or remove them from a stressful situation. Be Respectful & Kind: Dogs are sensitive to the tone of our voices and the way we interact with them. Speaking kindly and offering affection helps strengthen the bond and builds trust. Spend Quality Time Together: Dogs need attention and interaction to feel loved and secure. Whether it’s playing, snuggling, or even just sitting with them, make sure to set aside time for bonding. Establish a Routine: Dogs thrive on routines. Knowing when to expect walks, meals, and downtime gives them a sense of stability and security. Create a Safe Space for Your Dog: If you’re going to be away, ensure that your dog has a place where they feel safe and comfortable, such as a crate, bed, or a home-away-from-home like Dog Star Ranch or pet sitter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What to expect when you adopt a dog! - A common misconception when it comes to dog adoptions is that it’ll cost you less. This is not entirely untrue, but you must keep in mind that although you are technically paying less within that first year you are still signing on financially for a lifelong commitment for another living being. Oftentimes, included in the adoption fee is: the cost of spay/neuter, first vaccinations, and microchipping. However, the average cost of owning a dog (even an adopted one) is still about $1,500 a year.</image:title>
<image:caption>The average annual cost varies from dog to dog and owner to owner. The owner of a small breed will not need to purchase dog food nearly as much as someone with a large breed. Someone with a shorthaired dog will likely spend less on grooming than someone with a dog that requires regular grooming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What to expect when you adopt a dog!</image:title>
<image:caption>For example: Your current dog is easy-going and loves to meet new people, but your adopted dog gets overstimulated quickly and has “stranger danger”. By comparing the two and expecting the adopted dog to behave like your current dog, you risk setting them up for failure when meeting new people, leading them to become stressed and more fearful.</image:caption>
